Suvanto – When the River Seems Still

When Progress Feels Invisible

There are phases in life that don't feel like progress at all.

Not because nothing is happening — but because you can't yet see where the current is taking you.

In Finnish, we have a word: suvanto.

It describes a calm stretch in a river where the water seems almost still. A quiet place between stronger currents.

At first glance, it may look as if movement has stopped.

But it hasn't.

And maybe life works the same way.

Going With the Flow

I have spent much of my life going with the flow.  Having faith that things will work out.

Sometimes willingly. Sometimes simply because I didn't know another way.

Like a small piece of bark floating on water — staying afloat, yes — but letting the current decide the speed, direction, and sometimes even the destination.

Along the way, I have seen a lot, experienced a lot, and learned many lessons.

I have hit more than a few rocks.

And somehow, the journey always continued.

But continuing isn't always the same thing as consciously choosing your direction.

When Stillness Feels Uncomfortable

A suvanto is not necessarily a peaceful place.

At least, not at first.

Stillness can feel uncomfortable.

Frustrating.

Confusing.

Even hopeless.

Especially when you are building something new.

Especially in entrepreneurship.

Because when nothing visible seems to happen, the mind gets loud.

  • Am I doing enough?
  • Am I moving in the right direction?
  • What if this doesn't work?

That kind of stillness doesn't feel calm.

It feels like uncertainty.

The Place That Made Me Pause

For me, Lapland became that suvanto.

Not because life stopped — but because, in many ways, life finally became quiet enough for me to hear myself.

There are fewer distractions here.

Less noise.

And often, just nature around me.

That kind of space changes something.

It slows you down.

And when you slow down, thoughts you have avoided for years may suddenly become impossible to ignore.

For me, that pause became something unexpectedly valuable.

Because maybe I didn't only arrive in Lapland.

Maybe, in some strange way, that quieter place also led me toward entrepreneurship.

Not directly.

But internally.

What a Suvanto Is Really For

I have started to think that maybe the purpose of a suvanto is not to stop us.

Maybe it is to make us pause long enough to notice what needs to change.

To think.

To breathe.

To realign.

To build trust.

I needed that in my own journey.

Not because I had stopped believing.

But because I needed time to become the kind of person who could carry this dream forward.

To quiet the fear.

To stop reacting to every "what if."

To trust that not all movement needs to be dramatic to be real.

Learning to Trust the River

I don't think a suvanto is naturally a pleasant place.

Not in life.

Not in entrepreneurship.

The lesson is learning to find the peace there.

To trust that the river moves continuously and inevitably towards the destination.

Maybe the current is simply gathering strength to reach the goal sooner.

So, just trust the river 💚 no matter what.
